Attractions in Manchester

The Visit Manchester website has hundreds of suggestions for things to do in Manchester and the surrounding area but here are some of our tips for places to visit in the area.

Arts and Culture

The Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road, Manchester

Owned by the University of Manchester this recently renovated arts gallery has won multiple awards and the cafe also serves a great latte in beautiful surroundings.

Manchester Museum, Oxford Road, Manchester

A stone's throw from the Samuel Alexander Building is the Manchester Museum home to an eclectic mix of artefacts in a beautifully renovated Victorian building. Take time to visit Stan the T Rex on the ground floor or the tree frogs who populate the Vivarium on level 1.

Home Arts Centre, Tony Wilson Place, Manchester

A brand new multi-million pound arts centre within walking distance of our conference venue, showing film, arts exhibitions and theatre from the UK and abroad.

The Lowry Arts Centre and Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quay

Part of a massive development of Salford Quays, the Lowry arts centre and Imperial War museum sit on opposite sides of the quay. The Lowry houses a collection of Lowry's work and guest exhibitions from other artists.

Sports and Leisure

The National Football Museum, Exchange Square, Manchester

A museum dedicated to the national game in arguably one the most football obsessed cities in the UK. This free museum is wonderfully interactive and also allows beautiful views of the city from its glass apex.

Old Trafford Stadium, Matt Busby Way, Manchester

A short tram ride from the city centre is the home of Manchester United football club known as the 'Theatre of Dreams' (for some!) Daily tours are available and even non-United fans reluctantly admit the trophy room is quite impressive.

Sportcity/Ethiad Stadium, Alan Turing Way, Manchester

If the light blue side of the city is more to your liking then a short tram ride in the other direction will take you to Sportcity and Ethiad stadium. The home of Manchester City and the site of Manchester's Commonwealth Games complex. Daily tours are available.
